Norway joins international coalition for sustainable AI
Press release | Date: 11/02/2025 | Ministry of Digitalisation and Public Governance
Norway is supporting a French initiative aimed at ensuring that the development and use of artificial intelligence take place in a sustainable manner. Norway has been invited to join the collaboration at the AI Action Summit in Paris.
“As Minister of Digitalisation, I want to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence in Norway. It will increase workforce availability, create new jobs, and help address societal challenges. At the same time, we know that AI requires a lot of energy. It is therefore important that countries work together to make technology more sustainable,” says Minister of Digitalisation and Public Governance Karianne Tung.
Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Kenya, South Korea and the United Kingdom are also participating in the coalition with Norway. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Microsoft, Nvidia, HuggingFace, the EU Commission, the Global Green Growth Institute, and Codes of Coalition have expressed their support for the initiative.
The Coalition for Sustainable AI was initiated by the French government in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The coalition aims to create a driving force that brings together various actors committed to working towards sustainable AI. The coalition will also work to ensure sustainability is included in future AI summits.
