Today, Norway submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2035 under the Paris Agreement. Norway’s NDC for 2035 is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70-75 per cent compared to 1990 levels.
'I am very pleased that we today fulfill Norway’s commitments under the Paris Agreement. We are submitting an ambitious NDC for 2035. That is something to be proud of', said Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.
In June, the Norwegian Parliament adopted Norway’s new climate target for 2035. The Paris Agreement requires that a new NDC, representing a progression beyond the current one, is submitted every five years.
'Before the Paris Agreement, the world was heading towards an expected temperature increase of nearly 4 degrees. Recent analyses show that fulfilling the current NDCs puts us on a path towards 2.6 degrees. This shows that the Paris Agreement is working. As countries now are strengthening their NDCs, we can get closer to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees', said Bjelland Eriksen.
The Government plans to achieve the 2035 target through domestic measures and in cooperation with the European Union.
'Norway benefits from aligning ourselves with the pace of the climate transition in the EU. The EU is the strongest driver of international climate policy and our most important trading partner. At the same time, we should have an ambitious and realistic Norwegian climate target that contributes to cutting emissions, creating jobs, and securing green competitiveness in the future', said Bjelland Eriksen.
Simultaneously, Norway will facilitate significant domestic emission reductions and a transition to a low-emission society by 2050.
Norway also maintains its NDC for 2030. Both NDCs are enshrined in the Norwegian Climate Change Act and have been submitted under the Paris Agreement.
