NOK 60 million to Ukrainian women’s organisations
Press release | Date: 26/06/2025 | Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Norway is providing NOK 60 million to Ukrainian women’s organisations under a new three-year agreement with FOKUS (Forum for Women and Development). The funding will be used to support initiatives to strengthen women’s rights, prevent gender-based violence and promote women’s participation in reconstruction efforts in Ukraine.
‘Women have an important role to play both in Ukraine’s fight for freedom and in the country’s reconstruction efforts. It is essential to invest in strengthening women’s rights and participation in these processes to build a free, fair and sustainable Ukraine,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide.
‘In the midst of a brutal, ongoing war, Ukrainian women have taken responsibility for keeping their communities functioning. Norway recognises the importance of their efforts and this funding is intended to better equip women to continue this vital work,’ said Mr Eide.
Under the new agreement with FOKUS, Norway will provide support to up to 90 Ukrainian women’s organisations, many of which are located in smaller towns and remote areas far from the capital city and the international spotlight. Local women’s organisations have unique insight into the needs of their respective communities, and they will play a pivotal role when it comes to reconstruction efforts.
FOKUS cooperates closely with two of Ukraine’s central women’s organisations: Ukrainian Women’s Fund (UWF) and La Strade Ukraine. UWF is responsible for disbursing the funds to local organisations. La Strada Ukraine operates among other things the country’s largest helpline for victims of human trafficking and gender-based violence. The need for this kind of assistance has increased dramatically since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Funding under the agreement with FOKUS will also be used to support the establishment of networks of women’s organisations and strengthen women’s economic and political participation in society.
Funding for the agreement is being allocated under the Nansen Support Programme for Ukraine. The duration of three years will give the partner organisations the predictability and flexibility they need to plan their work in the long-term.
‘The war in Ukraine is having severe impacts on women. Women’s organisations and women leaders play an essential role in civil society by providing support, building networks and creating hope. Norway recognises both the urgent need for, and the long-term significance of, women’s participation in reconstruction efforts, and this agreement is a means of further bolstering this,’ said Mr Eide.
