Lifting of sanctions on Syria implemented in Norwegian Law
Press release | Date: 03/07/2025 | Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Norway has today implemented legal acts to lift sanctions against Syria. Sanctions targeting key individuals in former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime will remain in place.
‘I am very pleased that we today have lifted most of the sanctions against Syria‘, said Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.
Norway decided to align itself with the EU’s decision of May 27 to lift most of the sanctions against Syria.
‘During my visit to Syria on January 19 this year, just over a month after the fall of the al-Assad regime, I advocated for the removal of sanctions. These were originally imposed in 2012 as a response to the al-Assad regime’s serious human rights violations. The Middle East needs peace and stability more than ever. We must give the interim authorities in Syria the opportunity to build a better future for the country. It is also positive step that President Donald Trump on June 30 decided to ease the U.S. sanctions on Syria‘, said Foreign Minister Eide.
The sanctions on Syria are implemented in the Regulation of September 2, 2011 No. 902 on restrictive measures against Syria. It enters into force today, July 2, 2025, and will be published on Lovdata.
