Statement on the fire at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant

Concerning news of a fire caused by a drone in the New Safe Confinement which protects reactor 4 at Chornobyl in Ukraine.

‘The Russian warfare continues to pose a major risk to nuclear safety in Ukraine’, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide says.

‘Norway has been working closely with the Ukrainian authorities on nuclear safety for several years and over the past two years we have further increased our bilateral support in this area through the Nansen Programme. Moreover, Norway supports the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s important work in Ukraine. The latest incident at Chornobyl demonstrates the importance of nuclear safety in Ukraine’, Eide says.
